The fylfot is a common element in ancient Greek and Roman art, partically in 'key pattern' which is used as a border design on vases and mosaic floors.

Key Pattern is formed from one or two continous lines that interweave creating repeating patterns of various complexity.  The group icon is an example of Key Pattern.  The name refers to the shapes formed resembling an old fashioned key.

Key Pattern has inspired several generations of architects in the Georgian Classical Period circa 1800 and the Neo Classical Buidlings circa 1900.

Neolithic Cucuteni-Trypillian culture
Wikipedia:
The Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, also known as Cucuteni culture (from Romanian), Trypillian culture (from Ukrainian) or Tripolye culture (from Russian), is a late Neolithic archaeological culture which flourished between ca. 5500 BC and 2750 BC, from the Carpathian Mountains to the Dniester and Dnieper regions in modern-day Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, encompassing an area of more than 35,000 km2 (14,000 sq mi). At its peak the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture built the largest settlements in Neolithic Europe, some of which had populations of up to 15,000 inhabitants. Likewise, their density was very high, with the settlements averagely spaced 3 to 4 kilometers apart.
